Supermarket giant Tesco has named Michelle McEttrick as its group brand director, following its biggest annual record losses last week.

McEttrick, the former chief marketing officer of global retail bank Barclays, joins the supermarket chain on May 18, and it is hoped that her expertise will assist in its turnaround. She replaces former CMO Matt Atkinson, who left the company as a result of a restructure of the marketing team.

Robin Terrell, chief customer officer at Tesco, said: “Michelle brings a real diversity of expertise and experience to Tesco. Her experience spans working on and leading the rejuvenation of British Airways and Barclays at BBH, to building the world's largest digital food brand, allrecipes.com, and working for agency clients including Coca-Cola and Frito Lay. She is a passionate, creative customer champion, and will be a real asset to our business.”
