Yorkshire’s largest shopping centre, The Meadowhall in Sheffield is hoping to become a little bigger, after extension plans to add 330,000 square feet for a new leisure scheme to complement the retail offering were revealed.

British Land, which owns the shopping centre, is currently in the process of drawing up plans for a second cinema, additional bars and restaurants in the new extension, with a formal planning application expected next year. Local media are reporting that the plans have already been discussed with Sheffield City Council and have been “very positive”.

The Meadowhall currently spans across 1.4 million square foot of space and is ranked as one of the top five shopping centres in the UK, with more than 310 stores, 50 cafes and restaurants and an 11-screen cinema. Each year the shopping mall has more than 25 million shoppers step through its doors.

Earlier this year British Land announced that Meadowhall would receive a 50 million pounds internal refurbishment programme to celebrate its 25th birthday. The refurbishment started this autumn and is expected to be completed in 2017. The shopping centre has also recently signed a host of new fashion brands including Diesel, Joules, and Jack Wills.
