British footwear retailer Clarks has announced that it plans to close its advanced robot-assisted manufacturing factory in Street, Somerset, less than two years after it opened.

The decision was made after the factory, named “Morelight”, failed to hit targets, with the 49 staff employed at the facility now in a 30-day consultation period, the Telegraph reported.

“Despite best efforts, we have determined that the levels of production and cost targets we hoped for will not be reached in the short to medium term,” Clarks commented in a statement. “We are therefore proposing to cease production and close the facility and will now enter a period of consultation into the viability of Morelight.

“We have a strong duty of care to all our employees and will ensure they are actively supported throughout the process.”
