Inditex expands presence in South Korea with new Zara flagship
Madrid – Following the opening of a new Massimo Dutti store just a few weeks ago, the first high street store in the country, Inditex is once again demonstrating the significant role it continues to assign to South Korea as a key market for its growth. This is marked by the inauguration of a new and spectacular flagship store for Zara, the group's main chain by turnover, in its capital, Seoul. The store also features a new Zacaffè coffee shop, reportedly the second one the chain has opened in the city.
Located at 459 Gangnam-daero Avenue in Seoul's Seocho district, one of the city's busiest and most vibrant shopping areas, the store spans over 2,130 square metres of retail space distributed across three floors. This commercial area is dedicated to selling the latest Zara collections from both its menswear and womenswear lines. The chain is marketing these offerings from a space that implements Zara's latest and most updated store concept. This concept is characterised by a carefully curated combination of its latest fashion collections, omnichannel technology, and architecture and interior design with distinctly contemporary lines. These elements collectively serve to create an elevated shopping experience, which on this occasion is completed with nods to local culture and Korean art, and a new Zacaffè space.
“With a surface area of over 2,130 square metres distributed over three floors, this store embodies a contemporary retail concept inspired by the harmony between modern design and Korean cultural heritage,” highlighted by “a large-scale installation of ‘Imugi’,” a “mythical serpent” from Korean mythology, Zara emphasised in a statement. The store’s atmosphere also “offers a seamless and comfortable shopping experience,” from the new Zacaffè space, whose presence helps to affirm “the unique identity of this flagship store,” from which Zara will offer its “exclusive collections” and “the chain's latest omnichannel services.”
With a special capsule inspired by Korean aesthetics
Designed by Zara's in-house architecture studio, the new flagship store is spatially characterised by spaces built from a subdued and neutral colour palette, dominated by shades of grey, black and brown. This colour symphony reflects the materials used in the space's construction, such as concrete, metals and woods. These elements ultimately define the aesthetic and spatial sensations conveyed from within the store. They are complemented by the glass of the large windows and the natural light that bathes and floods the spaces, enhancing the warmth and quality of the entire shopping experience.
Beyond these general lines, the different environments of the store are articulated through a distinct series of volumes and planes. These not only serve to encapsulate the space but also to interconnect it, creating a visual, material and spatial journey through the different areas of the store. This itinerary guides customers through the areas reserved for the Zara Man and Zara Woman collections. To mark the store's opening, Zara has added a special collection that reinterprets traditional Korean aesthetics from a contemporary perspective. For the womenswear collection, the chain drew inspiration from the 'hanbok', the traditional Korean dress, and for the menswear collection, from Korean streetwear.
Alongside these fashion offerings, the chain provides its latest omnichannel services from this Gangnam store. These solutions integrate the shopping experiences from physical and online channels to offer a more fluid and uninterrupted, and, they claim, more personalised experience.
Alongside works of art and a new Zacaffé
Beyond the commercial offering, and with the clear objective of elevating and enriching the shopping experience for customers visiting this new Zara flagship store in Seoul, a series of Korean art and design works have been displayed throughout the store. These pieces include a sculptural installation inside the store by the Korean plant art studio Haiihwa; several works in the Zara Man space by Korean artists Rim Seoyoon and Park Sungwook; and the large-scale sculpture of a Korean Imugi serpent. This monumental element was designed specifically for this store in collaboration with the Korean studio Our Labour. Extending vertically across the three floors of this flagship, it serves as a unifying element for the entire space and the customer's shopping experience.
To complete the experience, a new Zara Zacaffè space has been installed on the ground floor of the store. This is part of the coffee shop chain that the brand has been developing globally as a strategy to elevate the customer shopping experience. The first space opened in Madrid in November 2024. This was followed by the first Zara Zacaffé openings in China, at its Nanjing flagship store, and in Korea, where its first coffee shop opened on May 9, 2025, coinciding with the inauguration of its Noon Square flagship in Seoul's Myeongdong district. Zara is thus expanding its number of specialty coffee shops in the city to two, at least reportedly. This new space, conceived as a kind of urban oasis in the heart of Seoul, features an outdoor terrace, the gurgling of water and lush vegetation.
Zara in South Korea
At the close of Inditex's last full financial year of 2025, completed on January 31, 2026, the Spanish fashion multinational operated a total of 45 points of sale in South Korea. These included its chains Zara (30 stores), Massimo Dutti (10 stores) and Zara Home (five stores). These are the exact same figures as at the end of the 2024 financial year. It now seems they are trying to scale up with this series of recent initiatives in the country, particularly in its capital, Seoul. It remains to be seen whether these openings have been accompanied by closures and how they will ultimately contribute to the group's performance in the country. In this market, at the close of the financial year, they recorded a pre-tax profit of 46 million euros, a decrease of 24.59 percent compared to the 61 million euros recorded the previous year. Regarding this trend, Inditex is careful to point out that this “does not represent the Group's profitability” in South Korea, as these results are subject to internal adjustments.
