John Lewis came out as the big winner of Verdict Retail 2016 Customer Satisfaction Awards, sweeping six awards across a variety of categories including best clothing retailer and best in-store experience.

The British department store group surpassed the likes of Asos and Adidas during the award ceremony, held last night at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Kensington, as best clothing retailer. The awards, which are based on shoppers' opinions rather than industry views, also saw online pureplayer AO.com hold on to its crown as best retailer, repeating its success in 2015.

"Whilst AO takes home the big award of the night, John Lewis walks away with six awards reflecting the intense competition in the retail sector," commented Maureen Hinton, global research director at Verdict Retail. "What these retailers have in common is a powerful determination to get the rules of retail right and deliver for customers."

The award for best footwear retailer went to Clarks, who was followed by Adidas in second place and Marks & Spencer in third. Very.co.uk was awarded the prize for best online retailer, beating sister Shop Direct site Littlewoods and Marks & Spencer to the award.

Asos was voted best online experience, as best online fulfilemt went to Very.co.uk and best click-and-collect retailer to John Lewis. "These awards are awarded by shoppers, not the industry, which makes the recognition far more valuable for all the award winners," added Hinton.
