Poundland known for its 1 pound price tag is to start selling clothing, but for more than 1 pound, as the new owners look to tie up the bargain chain with the group’s clothing brand Pep & Co.

Andy Bond, the former Asda boss who now heads up the bargain retailer as the boss of Pepkor Europe, an arm of South African group Steinhoff International, which bought the retailer in September, has said he wants to introduce Pep & Co clothing into every Poundland store, but not all pieces would be priced at 1 pound.

“The relationship between Pep & Co and Poundland will become increasingly significant. My ambition is that, over time, Pep & Co will become to Poundland like George is to Asda,” Bond told The Guardian.

The plan is to introduce full 2,500 square foot Pep & Co shop-in-shops into 10 Poundland stores from next February, with more set to launch in at least 50 of Poundland’s 900 stores.

Bond also added that smaller stores would also feature a few racks of clothing focusing on kids and womenswear.
