Should the fashion industry just change its name to the fashiontech industry? Ralph Lauren is the latest company to further integrate technology into their company. The company has announced that they will begin testing interactive fitting rooms at their Polo flagship store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan.

These so-called “smart mirrors,” created by a startup called Oak Labs, are capable of recognizing a customers clothing pieces via radio-frequency identification tags and displaying them on a large touch screen. And you thought Cher from Clueless had it all with her ahead-of-the-time wardrobe app?

Once the clothes are identified, customers can request different colors and sizes of the items currently in their possession, which will be brought to them by a Polo sales associate. For those non-English speaking customers, the “smart mirrors” also have options for Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Portuguese.

Ralph Lauren unveils new fitting room technology created by Oak Labs

Oak Labs really struck out by teaming up with a major brand like Ralph Lauren. A start-up tech company getting one of the most major labels in American fashion under their belt is certainly something to write home about.

As for Ralph Lauren, depending on the customer feedback, they could be integrating this technology into stores for their other brands like Ralph Lauren Collection and RRL, but no plans or timeline for this has been announced yet. Other companies will be paying attention to see how the technology is received, and may even want to get their hands on it for themselves.

Is it possible that Ralph Lauren just changed the shopping experience forever? Who knows how fitting rooms could start functioning with this new technology, but it could certainly make sales associates’ jobs easier.
