Smythson opens new flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York
British luxury lifestyle brand Smythson has announced the opening of a new flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York. The store, located at 575 Madison Avenue, marks 25 years since the company opened its first standalone store in the city.
The opening represents a key moment in the international growth strategy for Smythson, with the US serving as its second-largest market outside the home market. The Madison Avenue address was selected as a luxury shopping destination to cater to both local customers and international travellers.
“The opening of our Madison Avenue flagship marks the start of an important chapter in Smythson’s growth in the US, a market that is a key part of our international strategy,” chief executive officer Paolo Porta said in a release. “We are proud to have such a loyal customer base in New York and are excited to be bringing our latest collections, as well as unique services such as our bespoke stationery salon and gold-stamping, to the city.”
Smythson partnered with architectural design studio Johnson Pinney Architects to develop the 1,400 square foot space. The retail venue features a new design concept intended to highlight the company’s product offerings across leather and paper goods. The location will showcase diaries, notebooks, stationery, business and travel accessories, games and homeware.
European oak joinery and curved wall panels are featured throughout the interior. A central focal point of the store is a curved book wall detailed in brushed brass, designed to showcase the brand’s notebook and diary lines.
The store includes a dedicated bespoke stationery salon, making it the only location outside of London to offer the service. The salon allows customers to book one-on-one appointments with stationery specialists for commissions including personal stationery, business cards, wedding invitations and holiday cards. Personalisation services, such as gold-stamping on diaries, notebooks and leather items, will also be offered on site.
The interior features a large-scale ceiling artwork created in collaboration with multidisciplinary studio Fung + Bedford. The hand-folded installation takes inspiration from the watermark found on the brand’s signature paper.
