Eddie Borgo, best known for his sculptural jewellery, is expanding his product line to include handbags and accessories.

The seven-piece collection is inspired by minimalist '50s and '60s chrome culture, particularly the boxy shapes and top handles that dominated women's handbag styles at the time.

"All of my friends were complaining about the size and functionality of their bags," the designer told WWD. "That they were too heavy or wouldn't open properly, so we were looking at the modern woman and what she wanted in a bag."

Interestingly, the materials Borgo chose were latex and rubber coating, which will no doubt make bags longer-lasting (and rain proof). Aluminum is also used to lighten the totes, traditional brass or white metal can be quite heavy, and interior pockets are designed for specific needs: lipstick tubes, credit and metro cards, mobile phones, and a discreet mirrored compact.

The collection will be available from next week exclusively at Harvey Nichols and HarveyNichols.com, and will come in colours green, beige, black and blush.
