GU, the sister brand to Uniqlo and part of the Fast Retailing Group, has unveiled its first-ever collaboration with New York-based fashion label Engineered Garments.
The five-piece, limited-edition collection launches on December 5, both online and at the GU SoHo store in New York City, featuring GU essential items, including outerwear and separates, reinterpreted with Engineered Garments’ distinctive aesthetic, such as deep navy tones symbolic of the brand.
Commenting on the collaboration, Daiki Suzuki, founder of Engineered Garments, said in a statement: “Designed around the theme of ‘Manhattanism,’ this collection reimagines classic American items from the perspective of Engineered Garments, and offers them at GU’s reliable product quality and price.
“Although the two brands have different customer bases, their shared commitment to quality production, and trust between teams, has produced high-quality items. I look forward to seeing this collection reach more customers.”
The five-piece collection draws inspiration from the vibrant spirit and character of 1970s New York. Highlights include outerwear made from padded, windproof, and water-repellent fabrics, styled with an adjustable hem and a functional hunting pocket, and a fleece jacket designed to resemble a pullover with a concealed front opening.
There is also a heavyweight heathered sweatshirt with a soft, vintage feel, emblazoned with ‘Manhattanism’, a shawl-collar cable-knit cardigan with elbow-patch–style accents, and heavyweight sweat pants. Most pieces are available in navy, olive and grey.
Prices for the GU x Engineered Garments collection range from 39.90 to 99.90 US dollars.
GU was established in 2006 and operates approximately 480 stores in Asia, with e-commerce sites in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan, and opened its US flagship in New York City in 2024, marking its first outside of Asia. The brand focuses on value and trend-forward styles, providing “high-value fashion with a touch of Tokyo,” and has previously collaborated with luxury brand Rokh.
