London - Sainsbury is having a fashion boom with its menswear offer, as the British hypermarket business has tapped into the formalwear market, just in time for Christmas.
The company saw stellar growth of 13 percent in the last six months, as demand for more formal men's fashion has soared in the run-up to the holidays. John Carolan, head of buying and design for menswear for Sainsbury’s told Express.co.uk that for the first time in its history the people buying its menswear are largely male, rather than women buying for the men in their lives. Carolina further stated its customers are seeking high street trends but at lower prices.
Last month Sainsbury said 54 percent of Tu menswear is now bought by men for themselves, which is an increase of 23 percent over two years. In response Sainsbury has added over 15 new lines to its menswear offer.
Sainsbury’s Argos commercial director James Brown said: “The menswear clothing market is an exciting area of growth. Men are increasingly shopping for themselves and we’re focused on making it easier and more convenient for them
He said more men are also buying formalwear from the retailer than ever with its Tu formalwear collection’s sales up 40 percent in the year to September.
Global menswear is one of the fastest growing sectors with the UK menswear market expected to reach a value of 17.2 billion pounds by 2020.
